Piles (बवासीर / Arsha) affects nearly 50% of Indian adults at some point — yet most suffer silently, embarrassed, popping painkillers and fearing surgery. Ayurveda offers a different path: it treats piles as a digestive disorder first, and a local problem second.
What actually causes piles
In Ayurveda, piles begin with Mandagni (weak digestive fire). Weak digestion → constipation → straining → swollen rectal veins → pile mass. Sitting long hours, spicy food, low water intake and ignoring the urge to pass stool accelerate it. This is why creams alone never cure piles — the fire is inside.
The three types Ayurveda identifies
- Bleeding piles (Raktarsha): bright red blood, often painless — Pitta type.
- Painful dry piles (Shushkarsha): pain, itching, no bleeding — Vata type.
- Prolapsing piles: mass comes out during motion — advanced stage, needs doctor supervision.
The Ayurvedic 3-step treatment
- Step 1 — Fix digestion: Triphala-based churna at bedtime ensures a soft, strain-free morning motion. This alone stops 60% of the damage.
- Step 2 — Shrink the mass: Classical herbo-mineral capsules (Nagkesar, Haritaki, Arshkalp) reduce bleeding and shrink the pile mass over 4–8 weeks.
- Step 3 — Heal locally: A medicated oil applied to the affected area soothes pain, itching and burning while tissues heal.
Diet rules that make or break the cure
- 3–4 litres of water daily; a glass of warm water on waking.
- Avoid: red chilli, deep-fried food, maida, red meat, alcohol.
- Prefer: buttermilk, papaya, soaked raisins, green vegetables, ghee.
- Never suppress the urge; never strain. Use a footstool for a squat-angle.
